Amsterdam at the end of December is a city of lights on the canals, closed shops on Christmas Day and a New Year's Eve that sounds like a battlefield from midnight until two. Plenty of visitors spend the holidays here alone, on business or on a winter city break. Why the holidays count as peak dates
Christmas and New Year sit on the house's list of peak dates with King's Day, Pride, ADE and the busiest conference weeks. On those dates every booking is confirmed with half of the total sent ahead, including a returning guest's short booking on the day itself. Demand is high, and the roster available on the twenty-fourth or the thirty-first can be smaller than on an ordinary night. A cancelled evening then is almost impossible to fill.

New Year's Eve: timing around the fireworks
From about eleven at night until two in the morning on the thirty-first, Amsterdam is loud, crowded and full of fireworks set off in the streets. Many guests find this the least relaxing moment of the year to book. The two easier windows are the early evening, between six and nine, before the city goes out, and the morning of the first of January, when the streets are quiet and most visitors are sleeping off the night. A booking at noon on New Year's Day, followed by a long bath and a late lunch, is a gentle way to begin the year.
If you do want to see the year in with a woman from the wall, book well ahead and give the hotel entrance clearly, because streets around the canals and squares are packed. The arrival window is forty to sixty minutes to a central address.
Christmas Day itself has its own rhythm. Restaurants that open are fully booked, museums are closed, and many visitors spend the afternoon in their rooms. That makes late afternoon on the twenty-fifth one of the more requested times of the holiday. The evening of Boxing Day, the twenty-sixth, is often easier, because the city opens up again and fewer guests are waiting in hotels for something to do.
Keeping the room warm in winter
December nights are cold and hotel heating is slow. Turn the thermostat up an hour before the booked time, close the curtains and keep the window shut.
